  • 5 Energy Saving Tips for an Eco-Friendly Home
Apr 12, 2018

As per NASA records, the past 4 years have been the hottest years ever recorded. Summers are harsh and winters are getting colder. The weather is becoming unpredictable and natural calamities are more common. However, it is still not too late to act and make a change. We need to create awareness of these issues and share best practices such as energy saving tips before our situation gets worse.

An overview of the energy reserves on our planet shows us that our resources are slowly but surely being depleted. All developed nations are exploring alternate sources of energy. Each one of us can become an ambassador of change if we consider the world as a borrowed asset from future generations and not an inheritance from our ancestors.

Change is possible and energy saving habits can be formed without difficulty. Every positive change can get us in the right frame of mind for a better and brighter future. Every change starts within you and the actions you can take with your home. Thereafter change can be made in your neighbourhood, city, state, country and finally the world.

Here are some simple yet effective energy saving tips for eco-friendly home that will get you off to a good start:

Please share these tips with your neighbour or someone you know who would benefit from these tips.

Optimise Your AC

During summer, make sure your doors and windows are tightly shut and there are no gaps when your AC is on. Close your blinds and drape your curtains as this ensures faster and long-lasting cooling. And most important of all, please ensure that the AC has been optimally tuned as running an inefficient system would result in higher bills leading to excess power consumption.

Screen Your Windows

Install screens and films on your windows, which will protect your home from harmful UV rays. With the right high-performance windows and coating, you will not have to increase your AC output and more importantly, an AC might not even be required in every room.

Use Energy-Efficient Lighting

Energy-efficient Compact Fluorescent Lamp (CFL) bulbs are readily available and come in all shapes and sizes. They are much more energy-efficient than normal bulbs and emit the same amount of light. Another advantage is they do not heat up, so they are safe to be around and do not explode due to excess heat. You can also consider motion detection lights for your washrooms and walkway areas.

Use Solar Power

Consider a solar-powered water heater as this will save energy and reduce your overall bill. Ensure there are no leaks in the hot water pipes, and taking short showers will also help cut costs.

Switch Off Appliances

Every electrical appliance that is not in use must be switched off, especially microwaves and toasters as some people seem to leave them on ‘stand-by’ when not toasting or heating. You should also consider upgrading your appliances to current energy star-rated models. This will help optimize the energy levels and also save on power bills.
